The current flag of Yemen πŸ‡ΎπŸ‡ͺ has been adopted in 1990 after the unification of North and South Yemen. Prior to 1990, each part disposed with its own flag - northern Arab Republic was using a flag similar to the present flag but with a green five-pointed star in the middle of the white stripe. The flag of South Yemen's Republic differed by blue triangle and a red five-pointed star on the left side of the flag. After creation of the Republic of Yemen, all different elements were dropped from the common flag as a sign of compromise and unity. Thus, only horizontal tricolor in the pan-Arab colors were kept. The colors red, white and black traditionally represent solidarity with the other Arab states.
